Our roots go deep... in 1988 we opened our first shop selling streetwear and rave clothes. Sounds odd to use those words now but that was before ‘the suits’ hijacked them to be down with ‘the kidz’, we’re talking way back, when people would come to the shop to get their clothes, tickets and secret directions to where the party’s at.
Exciting times and a feeling of creating something new and close knit.
Shit soon changed and new laws meant you could go down for putting on parties, friends went to prison, some died/were murdered, but the biggest crime of all was some people sold out as the underground rapidly went overground. The smell of cash was too much to resist and some people caved.
Shotgun stood strong throughout the 90’s sticking to our principles and opening up 2 skate shops selling skateboard hardware and clothing alongside brands we still respected.
But it was tough, more and more brands either hit the wall or were forced to take the corporate dollar and sell in faceless department stores. Friends shops closed down with rising rents/falling sales forcing them under.
Then something called the Internet came along so we jumped straight on it and in 1998 launched shotgun online and tried to convince the fashion industry the web was the future.
Some brands came onboard, others laughed at us.
We continued our quest regardless, helping small independant brands sell in far-flung places all over the world.
It wasn’t long till the fashion world took notice
Then unfortunately the pattern repeated itself, some brands used us, copying us then jumping ship, others sold out and then the flood of shotgun clone sites sprang up to the point where today you can’t move for them.
But shotgun continues to the point now where although not being the biggest site in the world by far, it’s one of the only credible sites to buy clothing online and is easily the proudest of what we’ve achieved, never selling out or compromising what we do.Championing brands we respect to people we respect.
So know your history. That last site you shopped at will have been influenced by shotgun in some way.
